In the title piece a night counselor's experiment with three schizophrenic boys, who are valiantly trying to make their way in a world they cannot master and that does not want them, forces her to reexamine her ideas about heroes. It is the characters' humanity and thier inevitable choice of bravery in the midst of personal conflict that mark these stories.
