Excerpt: Romina Oprandi (born March 29, 1986 in Jegenstorf, Canton of Bern, Switzerland) is an Italian female professional tennis player. She turned professional in 2005 and has been ranked as high as 46 in the world (September 25, 2006). She first came to prominence in the top tier of women's tennis when she reached the quarter-finals of a WTA Tier I event in Rome as a qualifier, barely missing out on a place in the semi-finals with a loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova 46 75 67. She then subsequently made appearances at the 2006 Wimbledon and the US Open, losing in the first round of each to difficult opponents in Fransesca Schiavone and Svetlana Kuznetsova once again. Straight after the end of her US Open campaign, Romina would go on to win yet another ITF singles title at Denain, which would be her best result for the rest of the 2006 season, struggling with injury problems and losing matches early on in tournaments. The beginning of 2007 saw Oprandi lose in the first round of the Tier IV event at Auckland to a lower-ranked player in Laura Granville 36 46. However, she would then go on to another Tier IV event, this time in Hobart, and win a convincing match against a former top 20 player in Elena Likhovtseva before losing to rising Indian star Sania Mirza in the second round. Her Australian Open hopes quickly came to a close after a tough first-round draw, pitting her against the sixteenth seed from Israel, Shahar Pe'er. She would lose this match 16 36.
