While the boys were standing and peering in vain into the gloom for some hopeful sound or sight to relieve their suspense, something bumped against Jeems's knees so hard from behind as almost to knock him off his feet. Then, as he was about to cry out in alarm, something warm was thrust into his hand, the touch of which he knew at once. " Why, Jeff, where did you come from, and where has the boat gone to ? " was Jeems's greeting. "Is that Jeff, sure enough?" Tim asked; then as the dog sprang up and put both paws against Tim's breast, and insisted on licking him in the face, " I know it's you now, old fellow, without your slobbering all over me. Down with you, sir ; down, I say ! " " I'm glad Jeff lias come," said Jeems; " for if a feller's got to sleep out doors, he's warm to sleep next to, an' makes good company." " We've got to sleep somewhere, that's a dead go," Tim bethought himself on hearing Jeems's remark. "There's the dime lodging boat; I've got enough chink to put us through." "I don't want to go to the dime lodging boat," Jeems objected: " the men there drink and swear so, and one of them wanted to make me take a drink once." " Well, it wouldn't a-killed you if you hadn't a-druuk too much. And swearing at a feller doesn't hurt, doesit ? I don't care how much they swears at me if I can only keep out of the reach of their fists and boot-toes. You can cuss back ; but you're such a queer little chap.
