Bound in elaborately blind-stamped three-quarter morocco, gilt-lettered and decorated on the spine, over sky blue cloth that is gilt-ruled, folio (21 inches x 15 inches), in the publisher's velvet-lined solander clam-shell case in blue cloth with brown morocco gilt-lettered title panels on the front and spine of the case. This is the only issue of the first edition that was limited to 1000 numbered copies; this copy being number 764, signed by the author Joseph M. Forshaw and by the illustrator William T. Cooper. Volume 1 describes and depicts the fish-eating and specialist kingfishers.
