Description:This is the first book in the world to focus on contemporary Malaysian Chinese-language film. This book applies accented cinema theory, the subject of recent interest across the globe, to explore how a group of Malaysian directors use accented style, the Sinophone, or auteur theory to perform various linguistic, local, national, cultural, class, and gender/sexual identities against the dual context of global cosmopolitanism and local Third World post-colonialism. The book also explores how these films use diaspora or anti-diaspora discourses to respond to or overcome signs of state failure in a post-Malaysian context. The book observes that Malaysian Chinese diaspora discourse is not exclusively composed of anti-localization writings; equally, Malaysian Chinese anti-diaspora discourse is not necessarily a state-worshipping, visionary nationalism.
