The Earl of Cork

DougG Cooper
4.9/5 (15408 ratings)
Description:Edward of Norwich’s 4th period of memories begins at the time when King Richard II went to Ireland with a large army in order to subdue rebellion and restore order to the country. ‘Earl of Cork’ became an additional title for Edward of Norwich and possession of all the royal property of Cork are Edward’s rewards for giving King Richard his best service both as Lord High Admiral and as a commander of a large army division during the campaign.Besides enjoying the revenues of Ireland’s second most prosperous city, Edward establishes trading posts for his goods in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Wexford and Arklow before his departure from the supposedly peaceful English Dominion. Of course all of the Irish ‘kings’ who submit to King Richard, become friends with Edward, even though they are not inclined to be friends with each other. As soon as his sojourn in Ireland is over, Edward and his Countess Philippa lead an embassy from the English King to the court in Paris, where he and his team negotiate the marriage contract for 6-year old Princess Isabelle, eldest daughter of King Charles VI of France with their King Richard. There they are given a very warm welcome and luxurious accommodation in the Palais de la Cite. Queen Isabeau of France is put out when Edward is at his diplomatic best in failing to respond to her attempts to flirt with him, and uses her lover, King Charles’s brother Louis, Duke of Orleans to try and make things awkward for Edward.Louis becomes another of the French royal family to respect Edward however, and the diplomatic mission is successful in negotiating the best terms for Princess Isabelle’s marriage contract with King Richard. On Edward and Philippa’s return from Paris to England, they divert to Brussels, where Edward is tasked by King Richard with a final encounter with the late Robert de Vere. At Antwerp Edward is pleased to see the success of his expanded paper-making enterprise and to assist his squire in the success of his love-life.In England the love life of Edward’s Uncle John enters its final stage when he marries his third duchess, the famous Katherine Swynford, and to everyone’s surprise this meets with King Richard’s approval. The king also approves heartily when as a consequence of Lancaster’s third marriage, his 3 sons and 1 daughter by Duchess Katherine are declared legitimate and he gives them proper recognition as members of the royal family. The eldest of them, John Beaufort is already one of the best of his cousin Edward’s friends. When the Archbishop of Canterbury dies, King Richard is reluctant to appoint his obvious successor, Thomas Fitzalan, but Edward engages in diplomacy on both sides, gaining concessions from the Fitzalans in return for Thomas’s appointment as England’s chief primate. Following that King Richard seizes on another death to appoint Edward to the prestigious posts of constable of Dover Castle and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The continued negotiations with the French culminate in the famous meeting of the two kings; Richard of England and Charles of France at Ardres near Calais, where they discuss matters of common policy before King Charles formally hands over his daughter, Princess Isabelle, to King Richard who joyfully receives the now 7-year old girl as Queen Isabella of England.King Richard believes by now that he will die without an heir of his own body and wants to be able to nominate his heir. He doesn’t make much secret of the fact that he wants his heir to be Edward, and starts by having our hero legally adopted as his younger brother. Another far-fetched notion of his is that he will be acceptable to the Electors of the Holy Roman Emperor if he offers himself as a candidate to become Emperor, so he sends Edward on his most difficult mission yet, to sound out as many of those Electors as he can.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
