Description:This novel is set in Akron, Ohio in 1942. A war production plant, called the Fairmont Tire and Rubber Company, is making rubber gas tanks for military airplanes. Jane Palmer is the secretary of the production manager, Walter Farley. She used to be engaged to John Stansfield, but now she's going to marry Simon Field, who is Walter's nephew. Both men work at the plant. So do Walter's son, Paul, Paul's friend, Toby Hastings, a fat man named Hippo Bugby, and a little man named Ambrose Doolittle. Walter tells Jane that someone sabotaged the tanks and as a result, two government men, George Atlee and Luther Barnes, came to find out who the culprit is. One night, during a terrible snowstorm, Jane accidentally hits John Stansfield with her car and kills him. This upsets her terribly. But it is made worse when George Atlee says that Jane killed him on purpose. The evidence stacks up against her. Then, Atlee is murdered and Jane is again suspected, The people involved make a number of poor decisions, but a good one they make it to call Lieutenant Bill Grady to come and solve the case. He is in Cleveland and the reader hears several times how he's an excellent detective and is the cousin of the young woman, Prue, who has become acquainted with Paul and Toby. But for two thirds of the book, he isn't present. Prue calls Bill and convinces him to come.
