Description:Excerpt from In Memoriam: Thomas Smyth, D. DRev. Thomas Smyth, D. D., late Pastor of the Se cond Presbyterian Church of this city, died at his residence in Meeting street yesterday afternoon, at five o'clock. Dr. Smyth was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1808, and was educated at the College in that place, from which he graduated with the highest honors. After leaving College he went to London and began to prepare himself for the duties of the ministry by the study of theology. After a successful course of studies, in which he gained distinguished honors, at the age of twenty-two years he deter mined to come to America; He arrived in this country in the year 1830, and at once resumed hisstudies at Princeton College, New Jersey. He re mained there about one year, and at the expiration of that time accepted a call from the Second Presbyte rian Church, and arrived in Charleston in the year 1831. Immediately upon his arrival he entered upon the discharge of those duties which he so faithfully performed during a period of years extending over almost a half century. In July, 1832, he married the eldest daughter of Mr. James Adger. He continued to fill the pulpit of the Second Presbyterian Church, (better known as Dr. Smyth's Church, from his long pastorate, ) until about two years ago, when failing health compelled him to resign the active duties of his position to more youthful hands. He was, how ever, at once elected Honorary Pastor, and frequently conducted divine service even up to within a short time of his death.Dr. Smyth was the author of several works on theo logical subjects, the most celebrated of which was the book bearing the title, Presbytery not Prelacy.The deceased clergyman was greatly beloved by his ﬂock, and widely esteemed outside of his congrega tion, for his culture, benevolence and many private virtues.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
