It was from no seeking of my own that this service was devolved upon me. So far from it, I have conscientiously sought to escape from it, in the face of manifold appeals urgently press ed, for the past three years: for it seemed a very ungracious office, to become the censor of a com pany of devout people who are honestly striving to bring their fellow - Christians up to a higher standard of piety. But Providence at length interposed in a manner which seemed to annul all personal considerations, and to shut me up to the performance of a very unwelcome duty. No alternative was left me, but to attempt to bring the theology of this active and growing school, to the test of the law and the testimony. Of the manner in which the examination has been conducted, it is for others to judge.
