Description:Excerpt from Long-Range Agricultural Policy: A Study of Selected Trends and Factors Relating to the Long-Range Prospect for American Agriculture for the Committee on Agriculture of the House of Representatives, Eightieth Congress, Second Session, March 10, 1948 The House Committee on Agriculture is nearing the completion of its study of a long-range agricultural program. Extensive hearings have been held in Washington and in the various agricultural areas of the country. Hundreds of Witnesses have submitted their views on the subject, and a fund of ideas and suggestions has been accumulated Which Will be of great assistance to the committee. While it is realized that no one can forsee even the immediate future With too great a degree of certainty, the committee felt that it Would be helpful in its consideration of proposals for a long-the program to have before it the considered judgment of agricultural economists as to the major economic factors Which may affect agricultural produc tion, consumption, and prices for the next 25 years. With that thought in mind, the committee requested the Bureau of Agricultural Eco nomics of the Department of Agriculture to make a thorough study of the subject. This study has now been completed and its results are embodied in the following report. I feel that the Bureau has done an excellent piece of work and I am sure the report Will be most helpful to the committee. Believing that the information and analyses contained therein Will be of Wide general interest, the report is being printed for the use of the Congress and the public.
