It is a Slender plant with small leaves and it is exceedingly hardy, as the temperature not infrequently falls to 65 and 70 F. Below zero. Transplanted to good garden soil both Species become voluptuaries. They grow to great size, send out numerous runners, but very few blossoms, and produce scarcely any berries. The hybrids here dealt with are crosses between the coast species and several of the cultivated varieties. Work has been attempted with the interior Species, but so far with very poor success. The probable reason is that the interior species grows poorly in the wet more or less peaty soil of the coast region, and it has not been possible to prop agate it to the extent necessary, only few blossoms having been available for cross fertilization.
