Description:The vast majority of Roman Catholic priests and theologians have been forced into a reluctant silence when it comes to discussing birth control, celibacy of priests, ordination of women, homosexuality, and papal authoritarianism. I myself, while teaching in Roman Catholic seminaries for twenty-five years, was required to follow the official Vatican stance on these issues. But this suppression of free inquiry did not serve me, and it certainly did not advance the critical skills and pastoral effectiveness of those whom I was preparing for lay and ordained leadership. As Fr. Helmut Schüller, the charismatic founder of the Austrian Priests' Initiative, says, "Obedience has been overrated. The times require of us that we speak out." Hence, 425 priests joined together in drafting their "Appeal to Disobedience" in which they pledged to God and to his people to bring about urgently needed pastoral changes that the Austrian bishops were unwilling and unable to support because they owed their absolute allegiance to the Vatican. By way of atoning for my years of silence, I prepared a new website, http://ChurchOnFire.net, in January of 2015, following my retirement. My initial purpose was to equip my former students with solid biblical and historical analysis that would enable them to discern where and how Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI subverted the consultative and collegial process of Vatican II.
