Even thus a good deal of commentary is necessary. It is almost superfluous for me to acknowledge the help that I have found in Professor Seeley's edition. I have ventured also to consult from time to time Mr. Greenough's commentary, which is fuller than mine and intended for a somewhat different class of readers. As regards the Introduction I am especially indebted to Mr. Mackail's Latin Literature and to Mr. Warde Fowler's Rome in the Home University Library.
