Minorites in American Society: Second Edition (Classic Reprint)

Charles Frederick Marden
4.9/5 (33197 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Minorites in American Society: Second Edition Throughout its history, American society has included in its membership many groups who have been considered as somehow not, not quite belonging to the normative society: immigrants; colored people; and non Christians. The study of these groups and their relation to the larger society about them has occupied the attention of social scientists throughout the twentieth century. They were often studied particularistically, each group by itself or sometimes as classes of groups variously described as ethnics, races, or sects. Such study began to show that the position which each of the groups occupied in American society was in conceptual terms so similar that each could be denoted by the term "minority." Social science began to generalize about the characteristics of a minority and to describe typical processes involved in the relation of the minority to the higher status host group. Thus this aspect of intergroup relations became a recognized special field of sociology. The first edition of this book had certain features which are retained in this revision. The central unit of investigation is not minorities as such but the relation of the minority to the dominant group. At the outset such a focus required the conceptualization of the term "dominant" as the reciprocal of "minority." This term seems more appropriate than the term "majority" because the latter is commonly used as a political term, and does not carry with it the connotations of superordination and superior power which are better conveyed by the term "dominant."
