Before the two World Wars the study of marine plants was a matter of little more than academic interest; it became one of national urgency. The crisis caused by the cut-off of German potash supplies during World War I and a similar crisis with respect to Japanese agar during World War II awoke the United States to the industrial utilization of seaweeds and therefore gave useful purpose to marine botany in the public eye.The interest in marine plants has now expanded greatly with the recognition of economic importance not only of larger seaweeds, but of marine fungi, marine bacteria, and the fundamental food producers of the oceans - the phytoplankton. Increasing pollution of the sea along urban shores has focused attention on the conservation of industrial kelp resources and on the various destructive effects of ocean outfalls. Experimental biologists have begun to put marine plant organisms to use as experimental subjects in physiological and biochemical research.
