Description:Here is the biography of Allen Allensworth, born a slave in Louisville, Kentucky. On his third attempt, he escaped to freedom and became a nurse during the Civil War and later joined the Navy and became a Chief Petty Officer. After the war, he returned to Kentucky and became a schoolteacher, an ordained minister, and was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1880 and 1884. He was appointed chaplain of the 24th Infantry by President Cleveland and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. After his retirement as the highest ranking African American in the US Army, Allensworth, a friend of Booker T. Washington, moved to California and established a company to assist African Americans in migration to the town of Allensworth. The town is now Allensworth State Historical Park.
