Life of Saint Cuthbert

Right Rev Edward Consitt: Domestic Prelate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII
4.9/5 (33450 ratings)
Description:"THE History of the Saints of God s Church does not cease with their lives. They are buried in peace, but their memory lives on for all time ; and their sacred relics, after death, oftentimes exert an influence, and produce events, and have a history, greater and more striking than anything which their actual lives accomplished. Their bodies are exposed in costly shrines, and placed under the altars, or in the Confessionals of some majestic basilica which has been built to honour them. Or some great city rises on the spot where they repose, and is called by their name; and the lives and fortunes of a whole people, the progress and prosperity of nations become linked with and dependent upon the existence in their midst of the sacred relics of some Saint who, during life, was, perchance, but little known beyond the circle of his immediate surroundings. Of none is this more true than of the venerable St. Cuthbert. The events of his career are few, and mostly hidden. Though he laboured during several years as a Missionary and a Bishop, yet the greater part of his life was spent in the solitude and obscurity of his Monastery at Mailros and Holy Island, or in the little cell on the wave-beaten rock of Fame. Contrasted with his great contemporary, St. Wilfrid, the mark he made upon the age in which he lived was small and insignificant ; but since his death, what English Saint has so impressed his memory upon the hearts of the people ? What other name has exercised so wonderful an influence on the condition of the great northern counties ? For upwards of six hundred years the history of his sacred relics is the history of ancient Northumbria. To the mere temporary presence of the precious treasure of his Body we owe the Church at Lindisfarne, a hundred other Churches up and down this north country, the ancient See of Chester-le- Street, and, last of all, the stately Cathedral and City of Durham, and the almost regal power and wealth of its princely See. Such is the Saint the features of whose life I have attempted to record in the following pages. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
