The legend of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai originated in Chinese folklore, with written accounts dating back to the late Jin Dynasty, around 400 AD. In the tale, Zhu Yingtai, a young maiden from Shangyu County, disguised herself as a male scholar to pursue an education. During her journey, she met Liang Shanbo, a fellow scholar from Kuaiji County. The two traveled together to Hangzhou and spent three years studying side by side as classmates. Throughout this time, Liang remained unaware that Zhu was a girl, while Zhu quietly fell in love with him. When they parted, Zhu subtly hinted at her true identity and feelings, but Liang only came to understand the truth much later. Once he realized who she truly was, he rushed to propose-only to discover that Zhu's parents had already arranged her marriage to the Ma family. Heartbroken, Liang fell gravely ill and soon passed away. On her wedding day, Zhu insisted on stopping to pay her respects at Liang's grave. As she wept in anguish, the tomb suddenly split open. Zhu threw herself in and vanished.
