Description:This book is a scan of a 1984 dissertation on mating behavior among an unusual species of pigeon that breeds in colonies. The author researched mate choice, nest building, and other mating behaviors in a captive colony of Nicobar pigeons (Caloenas nicobarica) at the Lincoln Park Zoological Gardens in Chicago from 1980 to 1982. Her research data are supplemented by information from preceding and subsequent years. In addition, this dissertation contains a literature review of previous work on the Nicobar pigeon, an ethogram consisting of a list of Nicobar pigeon behaviors and their description, and breeding histories for all individuals who had ever reproduced. The 2012 printing sold here contains a brief update of relevant literature published after 1983. Few scholarly reports describe breeding behavior in the Nicobar pigeon, either in captivity or in its natural habitat. In recent years, the Nicobar pigeon has been genetically identified as the closest living relative of the dodo and the solitaire. Thus this dissertation remains as valid as it was in 1984 and is even more important today as scientists try to piece together the likely behavior of the dodo and solitaire and conservationists struggle to keep island birds from extinction. This book should be of particular interest to:*scholars, students, and hobbyists interested in the comparative mating behavior of pigeons *scholars and students who study birds that breed in colonies *anyone interested in the history of the Lincoln Park Zoological Gardens in Chicago *conservationists who wish to prevent the extinction of the Nicobar pigeon in the wild*scholars and students interested in any of the Nicobar pigeon's closest relatives, all extinct: the giant Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas canacorum), the Liverpool pigeon (Caloenas maculata), the dodo (Raphus cucullatus), or the solitaire (Pezophaps solitaria) *anyone interested in the biogeography and adaptations of birds that live and breed on small oceanic islands Genre: scholarly (dissertation) Length: approximately 200 pages Illustrations: scans of B/W photographsWe have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
