Description:Pokey is a small gray mouse with a large purple nose. He likes to poke into everything because he's so very curious. In the historical children's book Pokey Goes to America, the story begins in 1700s England. A sailing ship is being loaded at the dock where Pokey and his mother are gathering food for supper. Although instructed to stay close, Pokey's curiosity leads him to follow the men loading the ship. He finds the galley, has a large lunch, falls asleep and awakens to the rolling of the ship at sea on its way to America. Pokey investigates all aspects of ship life and his adventures lead him to nearly being washed overboard! He overhears some children explaining why their parents are making this long and dangerous voyage. When the ship arrives in America, Pokey finds a home in a stable and ponders whether he should go home to his mother or stay and explore this new country. Perhaps his mother would like to join him in America, where everything is so interesting! C. J. Arnold is a retired teacher who lives in Dallas, Texas. Her inspiration for writing the book: "The lack of patriotism and decline in factual history being taught has encouraged me to try to at least to have something for my own great-grandchildren." She has just completed two more children's books including a sequel, Pokey Goes to Philadelphia, set in 1776, and Stephen's Magic Pillow, about a Pilgrim child and his family travelling to a new life in America.
