Description:On a renaissance ‘other Earth’ where angels and demons are both very real, the old Duke Lorenzo, philanthropist and much loved ruler of Montravi has died and his youngest son Giacomo succeeded him. This son, though, is unlike his father in every way and has plans for elevating his own fortunes, and those of his house, to heights never before dreamed of by any ruler of that ‘other Europe’, MittelgarthFurthermore, unlike his fellow rulers, the new Duke does not follow ‘The Faith’ and has no scruples whatever in using the blackest of magic to achieve his unholy ends. What follows is firstly a battle of wits between the Duke and his demonic Chamberlain, and the rulers of the other realms who have always known peace between themselves and so are reluctant to credit Giacomo with any evil intent. But as one by one their fellow monarchs fall foul of the Duke’s plans, the evidence against the Duke gathers. Two cousins, King Tiernan – warrior king and born to rule - and Prince Owain – philosopher, scholar and reluctant ruler – are the first to suspect the new Duke of Montravi of embarking upon a war of conquest, but even these suspicions pale in comparison to the terrible ambitions of The Black Duke.
