The Publishers did me the honour to place in my hands the manuscript of the Autobiography, and several other documents, without any restriction on the extent to which they should be published. The reader is entitled to explanations both as to the nature and condition of these materials, and the manner in which I thought it fitting to execute the trust confided to me.
