They are friends, colleagues, young and old - and some critics - with Sheridan Morley on what Olivier thought of critics and they of him. As much as any other man or woman this century Olivier has become part of everyone's private world. There exists no outstanding and complete biography - for all the numerous accounts of him that have been written - for the simple reason that the total of the man, his life, and his work, is still too great to be embraced by any one individual. Here, instead, I offer a different kind of Life: twenty-two short biographies - twenty-three if we include Antony Sher's jacket drawing. Each reveals a sharp and private perception, some of them not recognisably of the same person.I asked each contributor to concentrate on a certain aspect or area of the subject, so that the pieces could be arranged in three sections. The first, "The Actor," includes what might be called the well-dressed pieces; the second, "The Director," shows the subject slightly more déshabillé. The last, "The Man", carries the reader, I venture to hope, further into the mystery and elusiveness of this great actor.I have also tried to make this celebration a little different from the usual "Festschrift" by encouraging contributors to be frank and honest. This approach is, I am happy to report, confirmed by the subject himself in a story that John Mortimer tells at the beginning of the final piece. I will not lift Olivier's remarks out of context, but they are my authority for this book, and for all biographical writing.
