The next journey into India given in this volume is that of Athanasius Nikitin, a Russian, whose narrative was translated for the present work by the late amiable and highly accomplished Count Wielhorsky, Secretary to the Russian Legation at the court of St. James's, who has left us the following account of the narrative itself and of the document from which it has been translated. " It will be remembered that during the middle ages, the monasteries in Western Europe were the only abodes of learning and science, and the only means through which records of times gone by were saved from oblivion and transmitted to posterity. The same may be said of the monastic orders of the Greek Russian Church with regard to the part they took in preserving the literary and historical monuments of remote ages. It was the task of many of those working and humble brethren, to commemorate in true but simple words, recollections of the past and occurrences of the present; to register periods of joy or of sorrow, and to describe in alternate succession events of the highest moment as well as trivial incidents of every-day life. 14 A register of this description, the work of a successive number of chroniclers, was kept in the college of the Cathedral Church of St. Sophia at Novgorod. It first attracted the attention of M. P. Stroew, a gentleman formerly attached to the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Moscow, and was published in 1821 under the title of Sofiyski Premennik, or Sophian Chronicle, in two volumes, 4to.
