In an introductory chapter, Adelaide M. Zagoren shows that career assistance programs help students find practical uses for their education, assist the institution evaluate the results of the education, and may aid alumni in their own career development. A career counseling program may establish important communication between the business world and the institution, and alumni career-related programs help the public image of the institution. According to Alva C. Cooper, alumni involvement is probably most helpful in the liberal arts college. Alumni must understand services performed by the career counseling and placement program, including orientation, individual and group counseling, outreach, career planning, and placement counseling and referral. Alumni are needed as speakers, as subjects of student interviews, and as sources for job development and experiential education programs. Attention is directed to program coordination, keeping good records, programs for liberal arts students and special constituencies, including graduate students, professional school students, nontraditional adult students, minority students, secondary school students, and alumni.
