Description:The gangs of homeless street urchins who plagued the streets of 19th Century London were generally regarded as no better than vermin. It was therefore unremarkable that when the body of young Harry Gadd was dragged from the St. James's Park lake, the overstretched Bow Street police were happy to write it off as another unsolved death. But this was not a drowning. He had been brutally murdered and sexually assaulted. The constable on the scene, Tom Thewles, a newly recruited patrolman, had very personal and private reasons for wishing to avenge his murder. Tom persuades his partner, Constable Jack Black, to defy orders and investigate the case in their spare time. Through a quirk of fate, obeying orders from no less a person than the Duke of Wellington, the pair are assigned to investigate the disappearance of a young gunsmith, Eli Turnbull. However their investigations are frustrated by mysterious embargoes imposed by two Government ministries. Tom, undeterred, perseveres and slowly unearths new evidence, showing that not only are the two deaths interconnected, but that the murderer is the very man behind Tom's obsession to get justice for Harry. The culprit is finally brought to trial, helped by the courage of Emma, Jack Black's daughter.
