Don't, Or, Directions for Avoiding Improprieties in Conduct and Common Errors of Speech (1889)

Oliver Bell Bunce
4.9/5 (30049 ratings)
Description:“An admirable safeguard against the commission of ‘social errors.’” -America, a Catholic Review "Don't" is an 1889 book by Oliver Bell Bunce that deals with manners at the table, in the drawing-room, and in public, with taste in dress, with personal habits, with common mistakes in various situations in life, and with ordinary errors of speech. For example, in addressing proper fashion, Bunce instructs: “DON’T wear apparel with decided colors or with pronounced patterns. Don't—we address here the male reader—wear anything that is firefly. What have men to do with pretty things? Select quiet colors and unobtrusive patterns.” As Bunce states in introducing his book: “Many of the rules given in this little book are necessarily drawn from established authorities, but a considerable number of them are the result of the compiler's personal observation and experience. “Among the injunctions are many obviously familiar to every person with any pretensions to good breeding; but, wellknown as these maxims are, it was considered desirable to include them, for the reason that, however universal a rule may seem to be, a careful observer can not fail to see it violated every day in public by persons who from their appearance might be supposed to know better. These instances often, no doubt, occur through thoughtlessness or carelessness; but this book is intended to remind more, perhaps, than to instruct.” Contents I. At Table II. In Dress and Personal Habits III. In the Drawing Room IV. In Public. V. In Speech VI. In General VII. For Womankind VIII.
