Description:Excerpt from Brief Romances From Bristol History, With a Few Other Papers From the Same Pen: Being Cuttings From the Columns of the "Bristol Times," Felix Earley's Bristol Journal," and the "Bristol Times and Mirror," During a Series of Extending From 1839 to 1883 In classifying the greater number of these Sketches under the heading of Brief Romances from Bristol History, I have tried to call attention to the many picturesque, curious, and often quaint, entries to be met with in the chronicles of our old city. Not a few of these entries are quite fragmentary or legendary, and most of them so Short as to be merely suggestive. Of this vague characteristic advantage has been taken to weave upon them little fanciful stories intended to be illustrative of the events, as also of the conditions, of the place and period to which they refer. If nothing else come of apocryphal Sketches founded upon the local passages and Shadowy traditions cited, it is hoped they will induce Bristolians to study more learnedly - though not perhaps more lovingly - than the writer has done the romantic aspect of the past and early history of their Old town.
